Tax Tips

Document Your Contributions - Many charitable organizations make extra efforts to collect money and goods during the last quarter of the year. Be sure to get receipts for the value of your contributions to UNICEF or other similar charities at Halloween and the canned goods and other non-perishables you put in collection bins for organizations that help the needy. Your last-minute contributions can add up. Remember, the organization receiving the donation must provide you with a valid tax receipt for the donation. A cancelled check is not sufficient proof.

Welcome To Drache Aptowitzer LLP's Online Office

We practice tax and charity law and represent people all over Canada in matters which primarily involve the Income Tax Act (and related laws).

We also practice corporate law as it applies to charities and not for profits. To see our site dedicated specifically to corporate law please visit

Many people are confused by the combination of tax and charity law,  thinking that  "as charities and not-for-profits are non-taxable entities "  it is unusual for  a charity lawyer to practice tax law also. However, the bulk of the federal legislation dealing with charities is contained within the Income Tax Act. So, it is important for charities and not for profits to have a lawyer familiar with the Income Tax Act and dealing with disputes in its application.

Our practice provides charities and not-for-profits with advice on how to handle a range of issues, including registration as a charity, structuring of donations, and dispute resolution with the CRA (from audit all the way to the Court level). We also help international organizations establish a base in Canada through the creation and registration of "Canadian Friends of..." groups.

We believe that your lawyer should provide more than just dependable legal advice, your lawyer must also provide quality client service. This means, giving you the best value for the work we do for you. We are committed to ensuring that each client receives responsive, creative, solution oriented and cost-effective legal services.

Please note that retaining counsel at an early stage protects your communications with me through the solicitor-client privilege (whereas your accountant can be compelled to provide information and / or testify against you, if not engaged by counsel as an agent).

Feel free to explore this website which will provide you with some preliminary information about the firm. If you have additional questions or would like to set up an appointment please contact us.

We look forward to hearing from you.
